Basic Service – Annually (Every 12 Months)

All fire extinguishers must be serviced once a year by a competent person (i.e. a certified fire extinguisher technician). During this annual service, the technician checks:

  • The extinguisher’s pressure and weight
  • The condition of the cylinder, hose, nozzle and safety pin
  • The correct signage and mounting
  • That the extinguisher is suitable for its environment

A record of the inspection should be entered in the fire logbook and the service label updated.

Basic User Checks – Monthly

In addition to the annual service, the responsible person on site should carry out a monthly visual inspection.
You’re checking for:

  • Clear access and visibility
  • Intact tamper seals and safety pins
  • No visible damage, corrosion, or leakage
  • Full pressure gauge reading (needle in the green zone)

Any issues should be reported immediately to your fire maintenance contractor.

Extended Service – Every 5 Years

Most types of fire extinguishers (water, foam, powder, wet chemical) require a more thorough “extended service” every five years.
This involves:

  • Discharging and refilling the extinguisher
  • Internal inspection for corrosion or damage
  • Replacement of certain components if necessary
  • Step 4: Specific Disposal Methods by Type

CO₂ Extinguishers – Pressure Test Every 10 Years

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) extinguishers differ slightly. They require:

  • Key Safety Warnings
  • A hydraulic pressure test and internal inspection every 10 years
  • Valve replacement if needed

Replacement

Even with correct servicing, extinguishers should generally be replaced every 10–20 years, depending on the type and condition.
